Prepare for the Move

Plan for More Than the Monthly Rent.

A clearer picture of the costs and timing can help you compare rentals and prepare for the move ahead.

Ongoing Expenses

Your Monthly Budget

Look at the full monthly commitment alongside the advertised rent. What’s included—and what you pay separately—can change how two properties compare.

  • Utilities, internet, and renters insurance.
  • Any recurring parking, pet, or community charges.
Ask Before Applying Which expenses are included in the rent?

Upfront Costs

Your Move-In Costs

Set aside room for the expenses that arrive before the first moving box. The amounts, payment deadlines, and refund terms will depend on the property.

  • Application fees, required deposits, and initial rent payments.
  • Utility setup, moving expenses, and any overlap between homes.
Ask Before Applying What is due, when is it due, and which amounts are refundable?

Dates & Availability

Your Timing

Compare the property’s availability with your own schedule. Leave room to gather documents, review the lease, and coordinate the practical details of moving.

  • Application review and the confirmed move-in date.
  • Your current lease ending, notice requirements, and moving plans.
Ask Before Applying Does the available move-in date work with your current commitments?

Before applying, request a written breakdown of the property’s costs and requirements.

Prepare to Apply

Be Ready When You Find the Right Rental.

A little preparation can make the next step easier. Gather the information you may need, understand the property’s requirements, and know where to go when you’re ready to apply.

Have the Details Handy

Gather Your Documents.

Review the application’s document list so you can prepare what’s requested. This may include identification, income documentation, rental history, and references.

  • Confirm which documents and file formats the application accepts.
  • Have rental dates and requested reference contact information ready.

Know What to Expect

Understand the Requirements.

Ask for the property’s screening criteria and application instructions before submitting. Knowing the requirements and fees helps you decide whether to take the next step.

  • Request the screening criteria and any requirements for each adult applicant.
  • Confirm application fees, refund terms, and any additional steps for your situation.

Know Where to Go

Confirm the Next Steps.

Once you’re ready, confirm the correct application destination and who will handle follow-up. Ask what happens after submission and how you’ll receive an update.

  • Verify the application link and the designated landlord or leasing contact.
  • Ask about the review timeline and what is needed if your application is approved.

Requirements vary by property. Submit applications and documents through the designated landlord or leasing contact.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Questions About Your Rental Search.

Choose a rental question

Availability

Confirm the Current Status.

Contact the designated listing or leasing contact to confirm availability and the earliest move-in date. An online listing alone may not tell you whether an application is already pending.

If you send me a property you’re considering, include your target move-in date so we can identify the availability questions to ask.

Ask the Leasing Contact Is the home available, are applications being accepted, and when could the lease begin?

Property Tours

Ask About the Showing Process.

Request a tour and confirm how showings are arranged for that property. Access, scheduling, and any steps required before a visit should be confirmed with the listing or leasing contact.

If you’re searching from out of town, ask whether a live video walkthrough is available and which details you would like to see more closely.

Before the Visit Confirm the appointment, access instructions, and who will meet you or guide the showing.

Applications

Apply Through the Designated Contact.

The property’s landlord or authorized leasing representative provides the application instructions and handles the screening and approval process.

My role is focused on your rental search. I do not provide property management services. Confirm where to apply, how to submit documents, and who will answer application questions before sending anything.

Before Submitting Verify the application destination, required fees, and follow-up contact.

Pets

Check the Property’s Written Policy.

Ask the leasing contact for the pet policy before applying. Confirm any restrictions, approval requirements, and one-time or recurring charges rather than relying only on a brief listing description.

Share the relevant details about your pets early so you can clarify whether the property fits your needs before spending time on the application.

Ask for the Details What pets are permitted, what approval is required, and what additional charges apply?

Before Signing

Make Sure the Details Are Clear.

Review the lease dates, payment schedule, deposits, renewal and notice terms, and any additional charges. Clarify which utilities and routine upkeep are your responsibility.

Confirm how repairs are reported and whom to contact after move-in. Ask for clarification on anything unclear, and make sure agreed terms appear in the written lease.

Keep for Reference Retain the signed lease, any addenda, and the designated maintenance contact information.
